Martha Bixler collection [manuscript].

The Martha Bixler Collection contains photographs, unedited transcripts and audio cassette recordings of a series of interviews conducted in 1988 with key members of the American Recorder Society for publication in their magazine, 1988-1989. Many of the interviews were conducted by Martha Bixler in conjunction with other members of the American Recorder Society Board and staff. This collection also contains issues of serials from the 1950s through the 1990s that celebrate recorder music.

The American Recorder Society was founded in 1939 in New York City by Suzanne Bloch, Margaret Bradford, and Irmgard Lehrer. Its aim was to provide a meeting place for recorder players in order to stimulate and improve the appreciation and playing of recorder music. Martha Bixler has bachelor's degrees from Smith College and the Yale University School of Music, and a master's degree from Brooklyn College. She has taught and performed internationally as well as being an instructor in recorder at Teachers College of Columbia University and at Sarah Lawrence College.
